What can happen?

With four points, Hungary are already guaranteed at least third spot and qualification as a best third place team. They will top the group with a win and can also do so with a draw, provided Iceland do not beat Austria by two goals or more.

Portugal will also qualify if they win and will top the group unless Iceland win by a larger margin. Still following? It gets complicated if Portugal and Iceland both draw. In that scenario, Portugal can only finish second if they score more goals than Iceland this evening. In the event of a 1-1 draw for Portugal and a 0-0 for Iceland, it will go down to the sides’ fair play ranking.

It’s a big game for…

Gabor Kiraly: Last week, the 40-year Hungary goalkeeper old became the oldest player ever to feature in a European Championship finals, breaking the record of Germany’s Lothar Matthäus. This evening, in his trusty grey tracksuit bottoms, he could follow that landmark moment by dumping Ronaldo and company out of the tournament.

The contrast with the Portugal captain could not be more marked. A nomadic career has taken in spells with Crystal Palace, West Ham, Aston Villa, Burnley and Fulham.

Best stat…

The omens are not good for the Hungarians, with a record in competitive fixtures of played five, lost five against Portugal.

Player to watch…

Cristiano Ronaldo: Love him or loathe him, it’s hard to take your eyes off the Real Madrid superstar. At these championships he has provided a one man theatre show, living out his frustrations for all the world to see.

A man with a keen sense of legacy and his place in the football annals, he is only too aware that this could be his last chance at Euros success. If Hungary manage to upset Portugal, expect a dramatic final act.

Premier League interest…

Hungary none.

Portugal 2 (José Fonte, Cédric).

Past meetings…

Portugal 3 (Simao x 2, Liedson) Hungary 1 World Cup qualifier, 2009.

Hungary 0 Portugal 1 (Pepe) World Cup qualifier, 2009.

Vital information…
