Diego Costa finally opened his account for Spain as the European champions recovered from Thursday’s defeat in Slovakia to win 4-0 in Luxembourg.

In his seventh game for his adopted country, Costa suffered more agonies in missing several good chances before turning and firing home in the 69th minute.

By then Spain were 2-0 up after making heavy weather of breaching the home defence.

After 26 minutes of frustration, they went ahead when David Silva showed Costa how it should be done, picking up a dropping ball on the edge of the Luxembourg penalty area and expertly dispatching a half-volley into the top corner of the net.

The 21-year-old Valencia striker Paco Alcacer added the second with a smart finish just before half time. Juan Bernat got the fourth late on.

Spain had dropped Iker Casillas, the veteran goalkeeper being replaced by David De Gea, and predictably the Manchester United man had little to do.
