If the England team were more like Germany, they probably would have won a trophy more recently than 1966.

Which is perhaps why it appears the FA have looked to the 2014 World Cup winners for inspiration for the new England away kit.

Pictures leaked online show a new black shirt with gold trim and details that bears an uncanny resemblance to the away kit worn by the likes of Thomas Muller and Bastian Schweinsteiger during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa (where they beat the Three Lions 4-1).

The image of the kit, which is made by Nike, is accompanied by the slogan 'Green and pleasant land'.

It is impossible to verify if the new strip is genuine, however should it be, the slick design could be popular with fans. England traditionally wear a red away kit, although there have been variations over the years with navy a recurring colour. However, a black strip has never been worn by the national team.

England play Lithuania this Friday in Euro 2016 qualifying, before taking on Italy in a friendly next Tuesday.
