A Northern Ireland supporter has died after collapsing during their 2-0 victory over Ukraine in Lyons, the Police Service of Northern Ireland have confirmed.

The 62-year-old from Belfast “collapsed in the upper part of the ground and was treated by paramedics," read a statement. He was unable to be resuscitated.

The fan becomes the second from Northern Ireland to pass away during Euro 2016, after Darren Rodgers, from Ballymena, fell onto a stone beach from a promenade in Nice on Monday, landing on his head after climbing a seafront railing.

The Irish Football Association have said they are “deeply saddened” at the news. “The fan passed away as he was watching the game," Patrick Nelson, chief executive of the Irish FA, said. "This puts any result of a football match into perspective.”

“The thoughts of the board, management, players and staff are with his family and friends.”

Competing in their first major finals in 30 years, Northern Ireland supporters had earlier applauded 24-year-old Rodgers' memory in the 24th minute of Thursday's match, while the players also wore black armbands as a mark of respect.

Coach Michael O'Neill remarked that Rodgers' death put Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Poland, in their opening group match, into perspective.
