Denmark's Christian Eriksen got a hat-trick in a 5-1 thrashing of Ireland in their playoff second leg on Tuesday to help secure the final European berth at next year's World Cup.

The Danes, who were frustrated by the well organised Irish in a scrappy goalless first leg in Copenhagen, fell behind to a Shane Duffy header after seven minutes but soon struck back.

The visitors scored twice in three minutes when Andreas Christensen's stabbed effort on the half-hour hit the post and went in off Ireland's Cyrus Christie and that was quickly followed by a superb strike from Eriksen.

Ireland tried to regroup but were easily picked off on the counter attack as Eriksen curled in his second, this time with his left foot, after 64 minutes, and completed his treble 10 minutes later before Nicklas Bendtner added a late penalty.

24 min: And now James McClean!

A lovely little move up the field sees Ireland play out the back then press down the left.

McClean takes the ball on, cuts inside and shoots across the face of goal from a tight angle. Schmeichel probably had it covered but still, momentum building.

GOAL! Republic or Ireland 1 Denmark 1 (Christie OG)

Oh dear. Denmark find their way back in and it's a sloppy - if unfortunate - goal to concede.

Excellent work from Sisto down the left sees him cut inside and send a ball across to the far post.

Andreas Christensen pokes it towards goal where it bounces off the post, bobbles between Christie's shins and trickles over the line.

GOAL! Republic of Ireland 1 Denmark 2 (Eriksen)

Tie turned completely on its head. Tremendous counter-attacking goal from the visitors, who storm up the pitch after Ireland's first attempt to respond to the equaliser fails.

The ball ends up with Eriksen and he makes his class tell, firing a shot in from outside the area and in off the underside of the crossbar. Exquisite.

37 min: Ruthless, incisive stuff from Denmark and they have sucked the air out of the Aviva Stadium.

It's worth noting that Ireland need two, of course, what with Denmark now boasting two away goals.

Half-time: Republic of Ireland 1 Denmark 2

No time added-on at the end of the second half. Ireland need some time to collect themselves and recover from those three minutes that totally changed the tie.

Denmark are in the driving seat and have been hardly threatened by Irish since taking the lead.

45 min: A couple of Ireland changes, as you might expect.

Wes Hoolahan and Aiden McGeady come on for David Meyler and Harry Arter.

52 min: Randolph called into action by Sisto.

The Dane is allowed to run at the Irish defence with the ball and fires from outside the area. Randolph punches it around the post for a corner. It's cleared.

55 min: Duffy goes close again!

It's another header, this time off a corner from the left. Duffy rises to meet the ball and directs it towards goal but Schmeichel's down low and comfortably holds.

57 min: Denmark on the counter again through Eriksen but the midfielder doesn't make the most of the break, firing at Randolph.

Up the other end, great work down the right from Christie who dribbles through Danes then drills a cross. Nobody meets it.
