Roy Keane criticises Gareth Southgate for Harry Maguire handling after red card

The Manchester United centre-back was left to walk alone to the dressing room after his dismissal at Wembley against Denmark

Roy Keane has criticised Gareth Southgate for failing to console Harry Maguire as he walked off the pitch following his red card against Denmark.

The England centre-back’s form has plummeted this season following the incident in Mykonos while on holiday.

And after his red card at Wembley, the Three Lions slumped to a 1-0 defeat in the Nations League. 

But Keane insists he would have liked to have seen Southgate embrace Maguire as he marched towards the dressing room.

“I think sometimes he [Gareth] knows Harry has had a tough time on and off the pitch,” Keane explained on ITV. “A pat on the back would have helped him.

“That would have settled him from Gareth.”

Keane is also concerned that Manchester United is not the right environment at present to help Maguire regain his confidence.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side suffered a 6-1 hammering at the hands of Tottenham before the break, meaning Maguire could be under even more pressure as he returns to club football.

“The only down side is for Maguire, he's going back to a team not full of confidence,” Keane added.

“I've been in situations before when I was in a situation with brilliant characters, I felt the dressing room was the best in the world. He's not going to get that, in that back four.

“I wouldn't be anywhere near those lads - I don't see them as leaders.”

Maguire will likely feature at the heart of the United defence at Newcastle on Saturday.
