Tottenham's Danny Rose almost missed England meeting after changing phones

If it wasn't for hearing his team-mates talk about it, Rose wouldn't have been at St George's Park last month

Tottenham Hotspur full-back Danny Rose has revealed how he almost missed out on last month’s England gathering after changing his phone number.

Roy Hodgson staged the meeting of players he considers likely to be in contention for this summer’s European Championship, excluding those who are yet to receive a call-up, in February.

The 25-year-old has never played for the senior squad, despite several uncapped calls to duty, but was ever-present for the England under-21s side between 2009-2013 before representing Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Now excelling at left-back for Mauricio Pochettino’s title-chasing Spurs, Rose divulged how a mobile phone switch almost prevented him from attending the session at St George’s Park.

“I changed my phone number last year,” he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “The lads were talking about the meeting and I didn't know anything about it.

“The day before, the people from the FA texted me and asked me if I was coming, and I was like, 'what meeting?' It was a big shock for me. For other players it might have just been a meeting, but for me it was a lot more. It shows I am maybe in the plans.

“I was over the moon to be included and I think I'm in their plans, at least a little bit. Even if it is a small part, it was a big bonus.

“I'm 25 and have not made an appearance yet for my country, but that's the aim for everybody. Hopefully I can keep playing well until the next time England meet.”
