Celia Sasic and Anja Mittag were on target with a hat-trick each as Germany recorded a massive 10-0 victory over debutants Ivory Coast in their World Cup Group B opener in Ottawa.

Two-time Women's World Cup winners Germany delivered their opponents a harsh welcome to the competition with Simone Laudehr, Sara Daebritz, Melanie Behringer and Alexandra Popp also on target in the triumph.

Germany fell just short of matching the record they set with an 11-0 victory over Argentina in 2007 and next up for the top-ranked nation is a meeting against Norway - who saw off Thailand 4-0 - on Thursday.

Germany won two of the last three World Cup tournaments having triumphed in 2003 and 2007, but failed to win on home soil last time at as Japan won the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany.

The defending champions begin their campaign tonight at they take on Switzerland in Group C, with Cameroon and Ecuador meeting in the other encounter in the group.

The United States are also in action as they take on Australia, while Sweden and Nigeria meet in the other Group D match.
