Nottingham Forest have confirmed Roy Keane has returned to the club as assistant manager to Martin O’Neill.

The 47-year-old spent three years at Forest as a player before joining Manchester United in 1993 for a then British-record of £3.75 million.

O’Neill failed to hide his desire to work again with Keane after joining Forest two weeks ago, placing the credit for the Irish qualifying for Euro 2016 with Keane.

“I would dearly like him to join us,” O’Neill said. “Overall, he was great for me, and great for the [Ireland] players.

“And the genuine truth is that I don’t think that we would have qualified for the Euros [Euro 2016] without his presence. I have been unflinching in that support.”
