Amorim 'in a rush' to be competitive

Manchester United have work to do at Old Trafford after drawing with Lyon 2-2 in the Europa League quarter-finals.

An error from Andre Onana gave Lyon the lead in the first half after the goalkeeper allowed Thiago Almada’s free kick to bounce over his outstretched arms.

Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes both had clear chances turned wide of the target as they searched for the equaliser which gave Ruben Amorim’s men some hope heading towards the second half.

Leny Yoro confirmed their confidence after meeting Manuel Ugarte’s volley with a glancing header which brought the equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Joshua Zirkzee, coming off the bench in the second half, thought he had scored the winner after meeting a cross from Fernandes in the 88th minute but another mistake from Onana earned the hosts a point.

He fumbled a shot late in stoppage time but Rayan Cherki was on hand quickly to tap it home.

'A great atmosphere'

“A great atmosphere inside the Groupama Stadium (Parc Olympique Lyonnais), even if the failures of the Lyon metro system may explain a few empty seats, with some of the United fans affected.

“A couple of early injury stoppages may have cost Lyon a little momentum but there are signs they could be regaining it.

“Andre Onana, meanwhile, is not very popular with their supporters.”

Lyon 0-0 Man Utd

12 mins: Oh!

Rayan Cherki lofts a fine cross over to the left side of the box and finds Nicolas Tagliafico.

He tries to nod the ball back across goal but Diogo Dalot gets back to turn it behind for a corner.

That might have been a chance if he turned the header towards goal.

The corner comes to nothing for the hosts.

Man Utd's Champions League hopes

This has been a rotten season for Manchester United but there is still hope that it can be salvaged.

They need to win the Europa League which will put them in the Champions League next year as well as provide more options to strengthen the squad during the summer.

That goal starts in France tonight where they’ll need to keep Lyon at bay and hope to inflict a defeat on the Ligue 1 side.

Cherki's incredible season

Lyon’s Rayan Cherki has assisted eight goals in the Europa League this season, a joint record by a player in a season along with Atletico de Madrid's Diego in 2011-12.

Additionally, only Dries Mertens (39) has created more chances than Cherki (38) this season, with only two players creating 40+ chances in one season: Kevin De Bruyne in 2014-15 for Wolfsburg (52) and Hakim Ziyech in 2016-17 for Ajax (40).

Fernandes' star power

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes has been involved in 41 goals in the Europa League, the most of any player in the competition’s history (24 goals, 17 assists).

He also has the most goals and assists in the knockout stages (16 goals, 11 assists), while his 11 assists are the joint most by a player in the knockouts, along with former teammate Juan Mata.
