Louis van Gaal has opted for Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia in the full-back postions for Manchester United's afternoon clash with Sunderland at Old Trafford. Marcos Rojo, who started at left-back ahead of the injured Luke Shaw against Southampton, is not included in the matchday squad.

Anthony Martial, the recent 19-year-old acquisition who has four goals in his first four games for United, starts up front, with Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay in support.

The visitors start Fabio Borini up front, as Jermain Defoe drops to the bench to be replaced by Adam Johnson. Luke Cattermole and John O'Shea also come into the side, with Sebastian Coates and Jordi Gomez left out.
