Sunderland hits profits goal as TV revenues rise

Benito Carbone has revealed that the chance to play alongside his fellow Italian Fabrizio Ravanelli convinced him to join Derby County yesterday.

On the day that Derby's midfielder Seth Johnson completed his £7m move to Leeds on a five-year contract, the maverick striker joined the Rams on three months' loan from First Division Bradford City and admitted a return to the Premier ship, coupled with the influence of Ravanelli, proved too strong an attraction to turn down.

"Fabrizio is very special to me and he helped me come to Derby," the former Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa striker said. "Now we have to think about doing well together. But it is not just about me and Fabrizio, if we play like a team we can achieve what is best for this club."

Derby could have another two new faces in the team against Charlton tomorrow as their manager, Colin Todd, hopes to include the French midfielder Pierre Ducrocq and the Argentinian defender Luciana Zavagno while the on-loan goalkeeper, Ian Feuer, is expected to make his home debut.

Jason McAteer will end his spell at Blackburn Rovers by signing for Sunderland in a £1m deal today. The Republic of Ireland midfielder has started only one Premiership game this season, and was told yesterday he could leave. McAteer will sign a two-and-a-half-year deal with Peter Reid's club, giving himself a better chance of staying in Mick McCarthy's plans for the World Cup.

The Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has ended speculation about his future by signing a new five-year contract.

Tottenham's Argentinian full-back Mauricio Taricco will not be punished for the tackle that injured Everton's Thomas Gravesen in a Premiership match at Goodison Park in August. The match referee, David Elleray, has told the Football Association he saw the incident and did not consider it worthy of punishment. In such circumstances, there is no further action that the FA can take.

In the same match Elleray sent off two Tottenham players, Gary Doherty and Gustavo Poyet, but later admitted he was wrong to dismiss Doherty who was consequently spared a suspension.

Birmingham City are set to sign former player Paul Devlin on loan from Sheffield United today. The striker will talk to caretaker manager Mick Mills after an approach was made yesterday. The move sees Devlin go back to St Andrews on loan with a view to a £500,000 switch back to the Midlands.
