FA Cup Round-Up: Weymouth blow big chance by handing a gift to Bishop

Weymouth have only themselves to blame for not reaching the second round of the FA Cup for the first time in 23 years when they threw away what would have been a famous victory over Bury in front of the BBC cameras at their modest Wessex stadium yesterday.

Andy Bishop saved Chris Casper's men as his header made the score 2-2 after the Weymouth goalkeeper, Arran Lee-Barrett, fluffed a cross from Nicky Adams. Two goals in 10 second-half minutes from Simon Weatherstone and Richard Logan, after Marc Pugh's opener for Bury, meant an upset was on before Bishop struck to take the Conference play-off hopefuls to a replay at Gigg Lane and a potential second-round encounter at home to Chester.

Another tie between League and non-League opposition will also require a replay after Farsley Celtic held League Two MK Dons to a goalless draw. Martin Allen's side dominated their Conference North opponents but could not beat the goalkeeper Paul Cuss.

On Saturday, non-League Basingstoke beat Chesterfield 1-0 to earn a second-round tie with Chelmsford or Aldershot. Matthew Warner scored the only goal at The Camrose to give the Conference South's bottom side an unexpected victory.

Defeat for the Spireites was a blow after they beat Manchester City and West Ham in the Carling Cup before going out on penalties to Charlton in midweek.

Paul Sturrock started his managerial career at Swindon with a surprise win over League One promotion hopefuls Carlisle, giving them a second-round trip to Tranmere.
