Benoit Assou-Ekotto was released by Tottenham Hotspur this evening after nine years at the club.

The 30-year-old, who has not played for the club since May 2013, was earning £40,000 a week despite not even training with the first team.

After the news broke, the Cameroon full-back brilliantly changed his Twitter profile, to this image with the word 'Freedom'.

He also posted this on Instagram:

Spurs had earlier confirmed the news on their Twitter account.

He was given the opportunity to prove himself in the Championship last season when loaned to QPR, and played 30 times for the west London club. But Rangers' manager Harry Redknapp chose not to sign him permanently in the summer.
