It may have taken him three days to admit, but Jack Wilshere has owned up to smoking a cigarette on a night out after Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Napoli last week, but insists he is not a smoker.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, the midfielder, who scored the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with West Brom on Sunday, said he had made a mistake, and it will be the last time he tries a crafty fag.
Wilshere’s spokesperson had initially claimed that he was only holding the cigarette as a dare from his friends, but this has been revealed to not be the case.
“I made a mistake, players make mistakes,” Wilshere admitted. “I am not a smoker.”
The 21-year-old said that smoking is not something he will make a habit of. “I am not a smoker so I think that will be my last one.
“I spoke with the boss. He asked me what happened and we sorted it out.
“He put me in the team [against West Brom], and hopefully I repaid him."
Playing down the incident, the player responded to chant from the Arsenal fans at the Hawthorns of “Jack Wilshere, he smokes when wants”, tweeting on Sunday night:
“Love the new song for me today! Haha fans were incredible again!”
