The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has strongly hinted that the Gunners' captain Thomas Vermaelen will be sold this summer.

The Belgium international has been linked with a move to Manchester United.

"It is a possibility that he goes," Wenger admitted to the press today, as well as revealing that the defender is out injured and will play no part in this weekend's Emirates Cup.

Wenger was full of praise for the Gunners' latest addition and potential Vermaelen replacement, £16m Calum Chambers. The Frenchman said that he had been following the 19-year-old for a while.

"I like the player," Wenger said. "He was a long-term goal."

One player that will feature for the Gunners this season is Joel Campbell. The Costa Rica forward, who excelled at the World Cup, returns from his loan spell at Olympiakos, who alongside Monaco and Valencia are in the Emirates Cup. The 22-year-old signed for Arsenal in 2011 but is yet to make a competitive appearance for the club because of previous work permit issues.

"Yes, Joel Campbell is part of my plans," he said. "He might play tomorrow against Benfica."

Arsenal face Benfica on Saturday, and then Monaco on Sunday in the two-day friendly tournament.
