Everton have been relegated from the WSL1 after 21 years in the top-flight following a 2-0 defeat to Notts County on Sunday. The Toffees, yet to win this season, needed to end their woeful run to have any chance of surviving but the hosts proved to be too strong, with Aileen Whelan bagging a brace to seal their fate. Elsewhere, Bristol Academy climbed above Manchester City into fifth place after Corinne Yorston’s strike helped them to a 1-0 victory.

Yeovil Ladies have handed caretaker manager Jamie Sherwood the role on a full-time basis. Sherwood was placed in charge after the departure of Sarah Lawler last month, but after helping Yeovil maintain their mid-table position in the WSL2 with 10 points from their last six games, the former Ipswich Ladies coach has done enough to earn a permanent deal with the club.

Player of the week: Aileen Whelan (Notts County)

While the pressure was very much on their opponents, Notts County knew that a defeat to Everton would give them new-found belief in their relegation scrap. The Magpies were on the back foot for the majority of the first-half until 22-year-old midfielder Aileen Whelan headed home just before half-time, before adding a late strike in the second-half to ensure there will be comfort for her manager Rick Passmoor come the end of the season.

Moment of the week

Eniola Aluko has enjoyed a fruitful year on the pitch. Her goals for England helped them qualify for the World Cup and she has played a key role for Chelsea, who are on course to secure their first league title. On Sunday, however, the 27-year-old made a pivotal step in helping the women’s game grow off the pitch. Aluko (pictured above) became the first female pundit to appear on Match of the Day and impressed the show’s viewers. It certainly shouldn’t have taken this long, given that the show recently celebrated its 50-year anniversary, but at the very least it highlights the growing prominence of the women’s game.
