Angel Di Maria bemoans Manchester United's ability to show 'best face' every week

Summer signing admits he's not been good enough this season

Angel Di Maria has conceded that his first season at Old Trafford has not been good enough and pointed to Manchester United's inconsistency this term as a cause of frustration.

The Argentina international arrived from Real Madrid for a British transfer fee record sum of £59.7m and was quick to make an impact. But after those initially promising few games, the 27-year-old has failed to hit the standards expected, even by his own admission.

“I’m not happy with my first year in England,” he said despite 10 Premier League assists. "I moved here from Real to win titles and this season has been very bad for me. I’m frustrated because I want to do better.

“The fans in England have not seen the real Di Maria. I know I can offer a better level. This year was not good enough."

Amid rumours of a possible swift exit for Di Maria, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said the winger must adapt to the club's philosophy. The player appears to share the view, and promisingly for those who wish to see him remain, is looking to a future at Old Trafford beyond this summer.

“Adapting to English football is not easy,” he said. “People told me the first year for a foreigner here is hard. And that’s true.

“My challenge is not for one year, but to become part of the history of Manchester United."

As well as his own failings, Di Maria also pointed towards the inconsistent performances from the team this term as a cause of frustration.

“The stadium is unique, the fans sensational – it is a fantastic club. My only frustration is that we haven’t offered the fans our best face every week. My dream at United is still to win the Premier League and Champions League.”
