Arsene Wenger has revealed that midfielder Tomas Rosicky is “devastated” after picking up another injury on his return to football that has thrown his Arsenal future into serious doubt.

The 35-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and after making his return from a seven-month injury absence in the FA Cup victory over Burnley last weekend, he picked up a thigh injury just minutes after coming off the substitutes’ bench.

While the Czech Republic international was able to see out the match, Wenger has confirmed that the injury will keep him sidelined for at least a month, and the Arsenal manager went on to voice his frustration at the midfielder’s numerous injuries he has sustained during his time at the club, having joined from Borussia Dortmund in 2006.

“He's devastated. Unbelievable,” Wenger said of Rosicky’s latest injury woe.

“Nobody understands [how he got injured]. I told him straight away after half-time to warm-up. I observed him, he's very conscientious Tomas, he did sprint and sprint and sprint.

“He comes on, after three minutes he got the injury. I looked at him and thought 'Tomas you do not run properly' because he didn't lift his legs and he lost some balls, I was amazed because he is top level technically.

“He told me after the game that he did it straight away, then I understood why that happened to him. He said 'I stayed on because you couldn't change anymore'. He warmed up well, for 20 minutes.”

Wenger added: “He's such a good player but his career has been disrupted by so many injuries.

“He was born in 1980, he's 36 [in October], it's difficult for him. Let's hope we have good news, that it is not as bad as feared.”

While Rosicky still has plenty of time to recover and feature again this season, Wenger may choose to leave him out of the side once he has recovered from the latest setback, and it means Rosicky may have played his last game for Arsenal.

With the Gunners competing for the Premier League title as well as defending their FA Cup crown and a Champions League tie with Barcelona on the horizon, Wenger may choose to maintain his strongest side in order to maximise their chances of winning silverware this season. Unfortunately for Rosicky, he does not feature in Wenger’s first-choice line-up and would also struggle to be included on the substitutes’ bench.

His strongest chance of making another appearance for the club is likely to come in the FA Cup, with Arsenal due to take on Hull City in the fifth round in a repeat of the 2013/14 final.

Should Rosicky leave in the summer without making a further appearance, he will depart after a decade of service to the Premier League club during which he has made 246 appearances and scored 28 goals, with both the 2013/14 and 2014/15 FA Cup successes to his name as well as the 2014 Community Shield triumph over Manchester City.
