Arsenal are hoping to secure Mesut Özil’s future by tying him down to a new contract worth a club record £200,000-a-week, making him one of the highest paid players in the world.

Özil has two years left to run on his current deal, but the club are keen to see both him and Alexis Sanchez sign new long-term contracts in a bid to appease fans that they do have the ambition to challenge for the Premier League title as well as keep hold of two of their best players.

Özil is said to be keen to sign a new deal after previously rubbishing suggestions that he is unhappy under manager Arsene Wenger, and the news of a new deal – reported by the Daily Mail – goes a long way to back that up.

The 27-year-old, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, currently earns £140,000-a-week and is already the club’s highest earner, with Alexis Sanchez receiving £10,000 less than Özil in his weekly salary. Talks between Arsenal and Özil are expected to go smoothly, though the club could have a battle on their hands to persuade Sanchez to sign a new deal.

The Chile international has shown signs of discontent in recent weeks, having stormed out of the Emirates Stadium after being substituted during the 1-0 win over Norwich at the end of last month. His behaviour is said to have angered Wenger along with Sanchez’s team-mates, and both Bayern Munich and Juventus are interested in signing the 27-year-old.

However, Arsenal are determined not to sell Sanchez and will attempt to renew their efforts to agree a new contract with the forward, who has returned to form after scoring six goals in his last eight outings following a difficult second season at the Emirates.

Germany are yet to name their squad for the European Championships next month, but Özil is expected to be named in Joachim Löw’s side when he announces it next Monday.
