Arsenal's new £16m striker Danny Welbeck made his debut for the club during their thrilling 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Saturday.

The 23-year-old capped his move to North London by scoring a brace to guide England to victory in Switzerland last Monday, but how did he get on against the reigning Premier League champions?

The Independent's Paul Smith gives his report on how Welbeck fared on his first Arsenal appearance.

What is his best position?

Welbeck’s preference is for a more central role in attack rather than playing out wide. In time Arsenal will probably benefit from Welbeck playing as an out-and-out striker. He has all the attributes to be a great success.

Can he be as good as Rooney or Van Persie?

If he flourishes at Arsenal and starts to score goals on a consistent basis then he may warrant comparison. At the moment he has a long way to go and a lot more to achieve before people can pass judgement.

Is he worth £16 million?

Taking into account the inflated fees being paid by some top-flight clubs you would have to say Welbeck was a bargain and worth every penny. He’s only 23, an England international and his best years are in front of him.
