Manchester United: Arsene Wenger claims United players are not mature enough to challenge for title

Wenger believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has potential but will not contend this season

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Manchester United’s squad lack the maturity required to challenge for the Premier League title.

United last lifted the trophy at the end of the 2012-13 season in Sir Alex Ferguson’s farewell season, and have not truly challenged since the Scotsman’s departure.

And though Wenger, who won three Premier League titles with Arsenal, recognises the potential of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, he thinks that run is unlikely to end this year.

“When you see United, they are one of the examples where there’s a potential. But they have not found a collective way,” Wenger told Qatar-based broadcaster beIN Sports.

“Maybe these players are not mature enough to carry the team play of a team like United, altogether. That’s the question mark now. You feel there is something coming out but it’s not ready.

Solskjaer’s side began the season with a 4-0 win against Chelsea, but have faltered since, with a home defeat to Crystal Palace and draws against Wolves and Southampton.

Manchester United are already seven points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, and five behind neighbours Manchester City.

Wenger has not been particularly impressed by their start to the season, and doubts that the current crop of players at Old Trafford can match the achievements of their predescessors.

“When you watch them play, they are not a candidate to fight for the championship.

“Will they emulate what Giggs, Scholes and Beckham did over a number of years? I’m not convinced.”
