Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour will be out for up to four months, Frank Lampard has confirmed.

The Scottish starlet has impressed since breaking into the first team with the Blues earlier this season.

And the 19-year-old deputised for the injured N’Golo Kante against Crystal Palace before hobbling off with 10 minutes remaining.

And now Lampard has confirmed that Gilmour has suffered a setback in his rapid rise this year and will miss the remainder of this season and the start of the next campaign.

Lampard said: “Gilmour has had an operation on his knee this morning.

“He will be out for between three or four months, unfortunately. He’s a tough boy but it’s hit him hard.”

Mateo Kovacic will be back in the squad against Sheffield United this weekend, but Jorginho’s impact as a substitute against the Eagles impressed Lampard.

“He did well when he came on,” Lampard admitted.

“He took control with his voice and quality of pass so I was very pleased with him.”
