Liverpool's hopes of returning to the Champions League were effectively ended with a 1-1 draw at Chelsea in the London club's first match since securing the Premier League title.

The goals came from headers from both captains, with John Terry putting the Blues in front after five minutes and Steven Gerrard levelling before half-time.

When Gerrard came off in the second half, both sets of fans applauded the 34-year-old midfielder who is joining Los Angeles Galaxy after the season ends.

Gerrard is exiting with Liverpool failing to build on last season's second-place finish and missing out on a second consecutive season in the Champions League.

Liverpool are six points away from the top four with two games remaining - fourth-place Manchester United have a far superior goal difference.
