Lampard says people forget Hazard is so young

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has rushed to the defence of under-performing star Eden Hazard.

The Belgian, just months after being crowned Premier League player of the season in a brilliant individual campaign that helped Chelsea win the title, has struggled mightily this season, not scoring in 11 league matches and adding just two assists; Hazard was taken off after just 58 minutes in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.

Chelsea have suffered from awful form, with just 11 points from their first 10 matches leaving them in 15th place in the league and manager Jose Mourinho on the brink of the sack.

But Lampard, Chelsea's all-time top goal scorer and one of their most decorated players, says that fans and pundits should lay off Hazard as he is still young and in need of support rather than criticism.

"I love Eden Hazard as a player, I was fortunate enough to play with him, his ability is frightening," said Lampard during an appearance on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

"I think we forget he's a young boy, he's come onto the scene these last couple of years, he's never had a moment like this in his career.

"He's never had to worry. He's generally played very well, last year he was creating all season, and was the difference for Chelsea to a big extent."

Lampard, of course, backed his former manager but admitted that Mourinho must see results improve.

"I think they should stick with him but results certainly need to change now," he added.

 Lampard was speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football (Sky Sports)

"Chelsea are a unique club. We all know the structure of the club and there's such a desire to win and a pressure. The owner, the board, the directors have taken decisions to win."

Club owner Roman Abramovich has gone through 10 different managers since buying the Blues in 2003 - although that has not translated into a lack of trohpies. Lampard says the club should stick with Mourinho to maintain stability, saying Sir Alex Ferguson's long spell in charge of Manchester United is a 'perfect ideal'.

"What has been said over the past two or three years the club wants stability and a longer game," he added.

Spent the first half largely on the left flank and while he didn’t get involved in Chelsea’s attacking play as much, he did his job at helping to keep Milner at bay while dealing with Clyne’s runs forwards. But the second half saw him struggle to replicate his first-half showing with Liverpool pressing well.

Was so often the driving force of Chelsea’s attacking play with his pace and tricky runs but had less of an impact in the second period.

Looked frustrated by not being able to control the game in the first half and found himself escaping a yellow although he eventually got one for pulling back Willian. Despite an up-and-down first period marked by some sloppy passing, the midfielder came out from the break in better form and worked hard to keep a lid on the likes of Hazard and Willian.

Tested Begovic with a few shots in the first half with his pace proving crucial in helping the visitors build up attacks from the right flank and also carried out his defensive duties well – making a superb clearance to deny Zouma in the second half.

After a relatively quiet opening period in which he kept dropping deep to try and find the ball, the forward provided the assist for Coutinho’s opener in the dying seconds of the first half. He was brought off for Benteke in the latter stages of the game, but Klopp will see the Brazilian’s showing as positive going forwards.

From the bench: Christian Benteke - 8 out of 10

Secured the win with his well-taken goal from Ibe’s cross after being brought on as a second-half substitute. Proved the impact change from Klopp.

"How important is stability? If you're getting results I suppose you're not that concerned. Manchester United was the ideal with Sir Alex Ferguson being there, the great Liverpool managers of the past again was the perfect ideal.

"I think it makes sense, you want to see a manager staying and a club successful. You want to see young players coming through to the team.

"That's the intriguing thing at the moment to see if they stick with Jose. He has got the best record Chelsea have had as a manager, he's a proven as a world class manager."
