Chelsea new stadium: Blues submit planning application for 60,000-seater Stamford Bridge to local council

The club's current stadium will be radically redeveloped if the planning application is approved

Chelsea have submitted a planning application for the construction of a new 60,000-capacity Stamford Bridge, which will allow current season ticket holders to keep their seats.

The plan, which will be considered by Hammersmith and Fulham Council, radically overhauls the current 41,600-seater structure and features an adventurous remodelling of the stadium’s roof.

At two public exhibitions of the design, it drew a 93 per cent approval rate among supporters, and the application will now be officially announced in a local newspaper published on Tuesday.

Chelsea hope the application will be approved by next summer. The club would then finalise plans to move away from the Stamford Bridge site for three seasons, starting from the 2017/18 campaign.

A move to Wembley Stadium is currently being negotiated despite Tottenham Hotspur’s intention to play at the national stadium in that first season while White Hart Lane is also redeveloped.

Chelsea are believed to be reluctant to groundshare with their London rivals.

Local residents have the opportunity to send comments on Chelsea’s plan to Hammersmith and Fulham Council up until 8 January 2016.
