Frank Lampard must upgrade on Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, according to Graeme Souness.

The Chelsea midfielders featured in the 2-1 victory over Lille on Tuesday to clinch a place in the Champions League round of 16.

Souness made time to praise the influence of N’Golo Kante, but still maintains the Blues could upgrade in midfield.

“I think the midfield is lacking,” Souness told Virgin Media Sport.

“I like Kante, we speak about him every time we see him about how good he is. But I think Kovacic and Jorginho border on five-a-side players.

“If I’m a midfielder and I’m in the tunnel with Kovacic and Jorginho as my opponents, I’m licking my lips. I’d want to play against them.

“I wouldn’t want to play against Kante. I’d want to play against them.”

Chelsea are free to sign players next month after their transfer ban was halved by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

But it remains to be seen whether Lampard will strengthen his squad or wait until the summer when more players will become available.
