Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea will play for the club again despite rumours in Spain that he will be frozen out of the squad by Louis van Gaal.

The 24-year-old is yet to play in any of the four matches United have had this season with the Dutch coach refusing to pick him in case he was distracted by speculation linking him with Real Madrid.

A deal collapsed on the final day of the transfer window with Real Madrid blaming the Premier League club for delaying getting their paperwork back in time.

Manchester United will offer De Gea a new deal at Old Trafford, but reports in Spain stated that Van Gaal could again refuse to play the keeper with De Gea to turn down the offer.

However, a club spokesman dismissed those reports as "absolute rubbish" and confirmed that the team will be picked based on merit.

"Those reports are absolute rubbish, the team will always be picked solely on merit," a United spokesman told the Daily Mirror.

De Gea is worried about losing his place in the national team with Euro 2016 around the corner, Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque has told him he must be playing regular football to be considered for selection.
