Kane faces a race to be fit for Euro 2020, but Maddison and Jack Grealish’s chances have improved

England’s Euro 2020 hopes sustained a serious blow this week with the news that captain Harry Kane faces an anxious race to be fit for the tournament.

Kane suffered a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring during the 1-0 Premier League defeat at Southampton on New Year’s Day and specialists advised an operation was needed.

Kane will now also miss England’s friendlies against Italy and Denmark at the end of March while there are fears his rehabilitation could see him miss most of April, too. He is not the only England player to suffer a serious long-term injury over the festive period, with Tom Heaton ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

Meanwhile several other England players have been desperately struggling for form in recent weeks, while others – such as James Maddison, Jack Grealish and Danny Ings – have all boosted their hopes with a string of impressive performances.
