Everton vs Bournemouth: Anti-Roberto Martinez tweets shown on big screen at Goodison Park
Martinez has come under an increasing amount of pressure from disgruntled supporters in recent weeks
Everton accidentally displayed tweets criticising Roberto Martinez’s management on a big screen at Goodison Park before Saturday’s match against Bournemouth.
Supporters were invited to tweet messages with the hashtags #EFCFanZone and #EFCvBOU prior to the game, which were subsequently shown on a large screen outside the ground.
The club’s stunt backfired, however, as several messages which read ‘Martinez Out’ were inadvertently published.
Martinez has come under an increasing amount of pressure in recent weeks, with his side stuck in a seven-game winless rut and suffering the worst home record in the club’s history.
Last week, Toffees supporters saw their side lose 4-0 to city rivals Liverpool before a 2-1 stoppage time defeat to Manchester United in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
Martinez, who is coming to the end of his third year in charge at Goodison Park, addressed supporters’ concerns in Friday’s pre-match press conference, describing Everton’s home form as ‘diabolical’.
“Our away form has been very strong. Our home form has been diabolical. Probably that is the real downside of our season, eight defeats and 39 goals conceded is not anywhere near good enough,” he said.
“There are reasons for it, not just one reason, there are many reasons and clearly we have to put that right and we need to act on that and make sure that doesn’t happen next season.”
