Sunderland have launched an internal investigation into why a waterlogged pitch at the Stadium of Light forced the postponement of their game against Reading. Both managers agreed with referee Neil Swarbrick's decision following torrential rain in the North-east, but the Black Cats manager, Martin O'Neill said: "It's inexplicable, really. For it [the rain] to lie, there must be a problem with the drains."

New signings Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson are now expected to make their debuts in the League Cup game against Morecambe.

Championship

Ian Holloway insists Blackpool will not be forced to sell Thomas Ince after the 20-year-old inspired a 6-0 victory over Ipswich at Bloomfield Road. Ince scored a stunning second-half pair as the Tangerines maintained their fine start to the season.

The winger is wanted by Swansea but Holloway said: "The transfer deadline doesn't bother me because he's got his dad [Paul Ince] who understands what is best for him. I have had a conversation with his dad and he wants his boy to stay here."

Jordan Rhodes was also on the scoresheet as Huddersfield beat Burnley 2-0. Amid Premier League interest for the 22-year-old forward, manager Simon Grayson said: "We have no intention of selling him until someone meets our valuation."

At Ewood Park, Nuno Gomes scored his first goal for Blackburn in a 2-1 win against Leicester, while Wolves started life without Matt Jarvis with a 1-1 draw with Derby.

League One

Scunthorpe's dismal start to the season continued as they were thrashed 4-0 by Yeovil at Glanford Park. "Those four goals were probably the worst ones you'll see," said Scunthorpe's manager, Alan Knill.

Portsmouth had defender Kevin Long sent off as they went down 4-2 at Carlisle. "Everyone has to come back down to earth now," said manager Michael Appleton. "It's going to be a long season."

Suspension and injury meant MK Dons could not fill their bench as they lost 1-0 at Paolo Di Canio's Swindon.

Deon Burton and Myles Weston ensured Gillingham kept up their 100 per cent record with a 2-1 win at Dagenham and Redbridge.

Bradford cruised to a 5-1 rout of AFC Wimbledon, who have now conceded 16 goals in their opening four games, while two first-half strikes from Deane Smalley saw Oxford beat Plymouth 2-1.

Dean Howell scored the only goal of the game as Fleetwood Town recorded their first-ever victory in the Football League, Micky Mellon's side winning 1-0 at Burton Albion.

Scottish Premier League

Teenager Tony Watt scored twice as an injury-hit Celtic responded to last weekend's surprise draw at Ross County by moving top with a 4-2 victory at Inverness.

Manager Neil Lennon said: "To score four goals here at any time is very pleasing, but to do it in these circumstances is remarkable."
