Jamie Carragher has had his say on former Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville leaving the broadcaster for the Valencia job.

The news came as a shock when it was announced on Wednesday afternoon, Neville taking his first step in management having grown to become easily British public's favourite football pundit since joining the channel in 2011.

Liverpool legend Carragher initially mocked his former Manchester United rival in a post on Twitter, and again during Liverpool's brilliant win over Southampton but writing in his column for the Daily Mail was rather more heartfelt.

"I knew Gary Neville would become a manager one day but the timing has come as a shock," writes Carragher. "And to think we had just started getting along!

"There is no question I will miss him and I’ll particularly miss the heated debates of a Monday morning when we are making decisions about which clips to show, not to mention the frequent jibes that fly around when the cameras are rolling.

"What’s more, I’m sure he will be a success."
