Jamie Vardy record: Leicester City striker scores in 10th straight league game to equal Ruud van Nistelrooy's record

The 28-year-old international can break the record when his side play Manchester United next week

Jamie Vardy has scored in his 10th consecutive Premier League game, equalling the record held by former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy’s.

The 28-year-old Leicester City frontman notched on the stroke of half-time during his side’s away meeting with Newcastle United.

After receiving the ball in the inside-left channel, Vardy cut back inside onto his right foot, dumbfounding Moussa Sissoko before sneaking a sweet finish inside the near post and past Rob Elliot.

The goal came on the same ground where Van Nistelrooy claimed the record during a 2-1 victory over Newcastle in August 2003.

On Friday, the former Dutch international posted a message on his Instagram account to wish Vardy good luck ahead of his record attempt.

The pair now share the honour, although Vardy will claim the record as his own if he scores against Van Nistelrooy’s former club when Leicester take on Manchester United at home next weekend.

However, the record is based on Premier League matches only, meaning that it only dates back to 1992.

If Vardy is to secure the all-time record for scoring in consecutive English top-flight matches, he must surpass the 12 straight games managed by former Sheffield United striker Jimmy Dunne in the 1931/32 season.
