Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has been in sensational form this season and currently leads the Premier League's goalscoring charts with 12 goals from his 12 appearances.

The former Stocksbridge Park Steels player has also notched in each of his last nine league games, a streak which puts him on the verge of equalling former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's 2003 record of scoring in 10 striaght matches.

And, far from being bitter about the prospect of his record being matched, Van Nistelrooy took to his personal Instagram account to wish Vardy luck.

#Records are there to be broken.. Go on @vardy7, all the best and good luck!

"#Records are there to be broken.. Go on @vardy7, all the best and good luck!", he wrote, alongside a image of him celebrating a goal at St. James' Park - the ground where he posted the current record in 2003 and where Vardy can equal it this weekend.

Vardy, who did not feature in England's recent friendlies against Spain and France due to a hip injury, will have to pass a late fitness test to be available for his side's trip to Newcastle United.

Should he play and score, the former Stocksbridge Park Steels player has the chance will write his name alongside Van Nistelrooy's in the competition's record books.

However, the Dutch striker's record is based on Premier League matches only, meaning that it only dates back to 1992.

If Vardy is to secure the all-time record for scoring in consecutive English top-flight matches, he must surpass the 12 straight games managed by former Sheffield United striker Jimmy Dunne in the 1931/32 season.

Maybe on Saturday morning I’ll choose. If he is fit he plays because every time he wants to play.

When asked about Vardy's availability for the game yesterday, Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri said: “Today he trained a little and tomorrow I hope he can continue to train. Maybe on Saturday morning I’ll choose. If he is fit he plays because every time he wants to play.

“I hope he is available. I speak with the doctor and the physio, if they tell me he is okay and 100%, he plays. If not, I don’t want to risk a player – not just Jamie. In all my career I don’t want to risk a player for a match and then lose them for a month.”
