The captain’s words are not overstated, and Lampard can add tangible weight to the comments by closing in on Bobby Tambling’s goalscoring record for the west London club. The ex-West Ham midfielder grabbed his 200th goal against his old club putting him two shy, and Terry believes only one man can rival him as the Premier League’s best.

"You can only single out two players to play consistently well and to score goals over the course of the last 10-15 years and that is him and Ryan Giggs,” he said.

"It's incredible, to see the number of goals he's scored at such a high level as well - Champions League goals, Premier League goals - and the hunger. He is an example to all the players here."

Although there can be some debate when comparing the two legends of the English game, the former England skipper has no doubt in his mind that there has never been a better player in blue.

"You talk about the [Gianfranco] Zolas and the best players to have played at the club, but for me he [Lampard] is the best," Terry gushed.

"We all love him, we'll all be pushing for him to reach the record."
