John Terry enjoyed Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham almost as much as the title-winning Leicester squad after witnessing his side launch a resilient comeback to ruin their rivals’ hopes of lifting a first Premier League crown.

The Chelsea captain is facing an emotional exit from his lifelong club at the end of the season, with his contract set to expire in the summer and the club already informing the 35-year-old that he will not be offered an extension.

It meant that Terry led his side out for what could be his final London derby, having returned from six weeks out with injury to skipper his side, and his emotion was visible for all to see from his very first tackle as he crunched Spurs midfielder Son Hueng-min to set the tone for what was a fiery encounter.

With Chelsea staring a first defeat by Spurs at home since 1990 in the face, Terry managed to rally the troops in the second half, and the Blues dominated Spurs – who completely lost their heads in picking up nine bookings as their title hopes slipped away – with goals from Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard earning the 2-2 draw.

The Chelsea players celebrated like it was them who had clinched the title, although their celebrations were quickly ended by a tunnel melee that resulted in Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink falling down the stairs leading to the dugout at tensions spilt over between the two sides.

Terry was quick to take to his Instagram page – the scene of many comical posts over the years – to praise the performance of his side and congratulate Leicester on their victory, but it was the use of one hash-tag in particular that caused a few laughs and revealed just how much the match meant to the Chelsea captain.

Terry wrote: “What a game that was last night. Great character from the players to come back from 2-0 down.”

It was what Terry said next that demonstrated why the players and fans were so pumped up to beat Spurs, with the former England captain writing “#notonmyshift” in a warning to Spurs that the 26-year winless run at Stamford Bridge won’t be ending any time soon.

“The atmosphere was incredible and we know how much that result means to you supporters. 27 years #notonmyshift

“Well done @garyjcahill and @hazardeden_10 on two superb finishes.

“Congratulations Leicester City and all their players, Claudio Ranieri who fully deserve the league title this year @chelseafc.”

Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who was among the nine that received a yellow card from referee Mark Clattenburg, admitted after that it was tough to take the end of the title hopes, but admitted seeing Chelsea celebrate as they did showed how far Mauricio Pochettino’s side had come.

“When the ex-champions are celebrating like they won the league at the end, it shows that we’re doing something right,’ said Kane, who also congratulated Leicester on their success.
