Jordan Henderson ready to finish his career at Liverpool after signing five-year contract extension

The 28-year-old says he wants to remain at Anfield for as long as he can after committing himself until 2023

Jordan Henderson has signalled his intention to see out the rest of his top-level career at Liverpool after signing a new five-year contract with the club.

The 28-year-old had been in the final two years of his previous deal at Anfield but despite having started just once in the Premier league for Liverpool this season, he had no hesitation in signing a long-term extension on improved terms.

“I’m very happy to have signed a new contract for a long period of time,” Henderson told Liverpool’s official website on announcing the deal. “I’m absolutely delighted.

“It doesn’t seem like too long ago when I signed my first one – it feels like yesterday, really – but a lot has happened since then.

“I feel it’s been a progressive journey for me throughout my time here and one I’ve enjoyed so much.

“There is no other place in the world I would rather play football. I want to be here for as long as I can be.

Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool paid Sunderland £16 million to bring Henderson to Anfield in the summer of 2011, but he established himself as a key figure under Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, inheriting the club captaincy from departing legend Steven Gerrard in 2015.

Henderson also played a significant role for England at last summer’s World Cup as Gareth Southgate’s men reached the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 1990, starting five of the team’s seven matches at the base of midfield in Russia.

Liverpool’s signings of Naby Keita and Fabinho last summer have increased competition for minutes in Klopp’s midfield, and Henderson faces a fight to win back his starting spot after his World Cup exertions.
