Jose Mourinho’s long-term Chelsea future is expected to be settled when he signs a two-year contract extension over the summer. Talks will commence with his representatives over the next month with a view to keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2019.

The Chelsea manager has two years left on his original deal, signed when he returned to the club in 2013, and there is a willingness on both sides to build on the success of this season with a new contract.

Mourinho earns around £8.3m a year and, with the new £5.14bn television deal in the offing at the start of the 2016-17 season, he will expect an improvement in terms in return for his commitment to the club.

He is currently out of the country on a short break, with the squad reconvening tomorrow to prepare for Sunday’s league game at home to Liverpool. He said last Sunday, after clinching the Premier League title with victory over Crystal Palace, that he would be at the club until owner Roman Abramovich said otherwise.

Having won the Premier League and the Capital One Cup, both for the third time, in his fifth full season at the club over two spells, Mourinho is in a strong position once again. There is also a harmonious relationship between Mourinho and the director Marina Granovskaia, now one of the key figures in the club’s daily business, and the technical director, Michael Emenalo. It was at the end of his second season in his first spell at the club that relations began to fray with the hierarchy.

This time the club are confident they have their transfer targets lined up for the summer window already, with two, possibly three, major signings and the departures of Petr Cech, Filipe Luis and Didier Drogba expected.

Under consideration as replacements have been Antoine Griezmann at Atletico Madrid as another striker, while Rob Green, out of contract at Queen’s Park Rangers this summer, is a possibility to fill the role as Thibaut Courtois’ back-up. Green would also give the first-team squad a much-needed extra homegrown player. There is currently no move planned for Gareth Bale.

Mourinho favours experience and will recommend the swift moving on of players who fail to make the grade in his side, as was the case with André Schürrle and Mohamed Salah. The club have looked at a number of players, including three at Southampton: Toby Alderweireld, on loan from Atletico Madrid, as well as Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin.

Mourinho is under no pressure to bring through academy players, in spite of the successful record of the Under-18s, who have just won the club’s third FA Youth Cup in four years. The production of young players will carry on as a useful source of Uefa Financial Fair Play-compliant income.

Meanwhile, Oscar will miss next month’s Copa America after the midfielder suffered an injury in training.
