Jose Mourinho’s much-touted manoeuvring to take over as manager of Manchester United appears to have been successful after a director of his former club Internazionale let slip in Milan that he was on his way to Old Trafford.

Inter’s Bedy Moratti accidentally revealed that Mourinho “is happy, he’s going to Manchester United”.

The sister of former club president Massimo Moratti and honorary president of the supporters’ group Inter Club spoke as she left a lunch meeting with Mourinho and her family.

“Of course he’s always fantastic and we missed him as a person here,” she said. When she was asked if that meant he might return to Inter, she added: “No, he’s happy now, he’s going to Manchester.”

Manchester United’s embarrassing 2-1 defeat by the Danish side FC Midtjylland in the Europa League has further weakened the position of Louis van Gaal, who faces a potentially tricky trip to Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup on Monday, his last chance of silverware this season.

The former Chelsea manager was in Milan after being invited by Moratti to watch Inter play Sampdoria.
