Club World Cup 2019: Liverpool learn possible opponents for tournament in Qatar
The Reds could face Mexican side Monterrey in the semi-finals with the potential to meet the winners of the Copa Libertadores in the final
Liverpool could face Mexican club Monterrey in the semi-finals of the 2019 Fifa Club World Cup.
The Reds will enter the semi-final stage against the winner of match 2, which will involve Monterrey against the winner of match 1: Al Sadd vs Hienghene Sport.
There is a caveat to the potential draw though as Al Sadd remain in the AFC Champions League. Should they win the competition they would then represent the AFC and move to the other side of the draw.
This would then put the runners-up of the competition in the first round against Hieghene Sport. Al Sadd are in the quarter-finals against Al Nassr and trail 2-1 from the first leg, with the second leg taking place on September 16 in Doha.
Chinese sides Shanghai SIPG and Guangzhou Evergrande, Saudi pair Al Ittihad and Al Hilal and Japanese sides Urawa Reds and Kashima Antlers make up the remaining quarter-finalists.
Liverpool lost in the final of their only appearance in the Club World Cup against Brazilian side Sao Paulo.
The Reds beat Saprissa in the semi-finals but came unstuck in the final, falling 1-0 thanks to a goal from Mineiro.
