Jurgen Klopp could name £32million Christian Benteke in his starting XI after the Belgian returned to action for the Reds on Thursday night.

Benteke had not played in a month but managed just under half an hour as Liverpool drew with Rubin Kazan in the Europa League.

Roberto Firmino also played 15 minutes in the game but is unlikely to be risked from the start. However, Klopp said that Daniel Sturridge remains a doubt to play against Southampton.

"Today we have another treatment and another scan maybe because there is a little bit of fluid (inside the joint)," said Klopp on Sturridge.

"If he can train, for example, tomorrow completely normally then it is an option."

Klopp also insisted that the when both Klopp and Sturridge return to full fitness, they will be able to play together.

"All good players can play together, it depends how they work for the team," he added.

"We have to use that when they are fit and that is the moment when I have to start thinking about this because in these short times between games it is really difficult to think about the game when they can play together.

"We cannot play with two or three players offensive players who only stay up front."

Jordan Henderson is expected back in November and Jon Flanagan before the end of the year.

Danny Ings, Joe Gomez and Jordan Rossiter are long-term concerns.
