Philippe Coutinho could return for Liverpool for this weekend’s Premier League trip to Newcastle as they look to build on Wednesday’s impressive 6-1 demolition of Southampton.

The Brazil international is likely to be Liverpool’s only player back from injury for Sunday’s encounter at St James’ Park, with Mamadou Sakho and John Flanagan set to be out until late in the month – the latter unlikely to play in 2015 due to his drawn-out return from two serious knee injuries that has not seen him play since the end of the 2013/14 season.

However, Emre Can is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season during the win over Saints.

Danny Ings and Joe Gomez remain long-term injuries and will miss the rest of the season, but manager Jürgen Klopp will be pleased to have all of those players involved in the St Mary’s rout available.

That includes striker Daniel Sturridge, with the England international coming through his first start in two months in flying colours as he scored twice within four minutes to overturn a 1-0 deficit and pave the way for the Reds’ League Cup quarter-final victory.

Klopp is likely to recall his first-team players – namely Simon Mignolet in goal, Nathaniel Clyne at right-back plus James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Jordan in midfield – but it is up front that he has a decision to make, with Sturridge, Christian Benteke and Divock Origi all finding their form over the last fortnight.
