Liverpool make me proud again following ticket price U-turn, says Jamie Carragher

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says Liverpool’s decision to overturn their controversial ticket structure in light of recent protests at Anfield has made him proud of the club again.

Thousands of supporters left their seats in the 77th minute of the 2-2 draw with Sunderland on Saturday following the Merseyside club’s announcement that some tickets in the Main Stand extension would cost up to £77.

But Liverpool performed a U-turn last night and apologised to supporters for any distress caused, leading to Carragher to dedicate his Daily Mail column to their decision.

The 38-year-old said: “Put results and performances to one side and what truly matters is having faith in the club you follow.

“So when I heard that Liverpool’s owners had taken the decision to freeze ticket prices for the next two seasons, as well as apologising for the idea of wanting to sell seats for £77, I felt proud of my club once again.

“The supporters started something big on Saturday when walking out of Anfield in the 77th minute and things snowballed to such an extent that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) realised they had to make urgent corrections.

“It wasn’t nice to see but they were standing up for fans across the country, not just themselves. Nobody wants to see stadiums emptying on a regular basis and hopefully that prospect has now finished.

“Rarely in life do you find people who will admit they have got something wrong, so it was bold of FSG to hold their hands up and apologise.

“FSG have done a lot right for Liverpool since they arrived five years ago. They have appointed a world-class manager in Jurgen Klopp and they have provided an interest-free loan for the stadium to be redeveloped.

“I see the new Main Stand taking shape every morning when I go to the gym and I cannot wait to see what it will be like once it is completed.

“But that initial decision to charge such high prices was the first time I had been left disappointed by the owners and thought ‘you’ve got this wrong’.”
