Liverpool winger Sadio Mane sets target for title run-in with Manchester City

Mané believes Liverpool will need to win all their remaining games in order to lift the title

Sadio Mane believes Liverpool will have to win all of their remaining Premier League games in order to beat champions Manchester City to the title.

Jürgen Klopp’s side kept their title hopes alive with a dramatic 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, secured by a 90th-minute Toby Alderweireld own goal.

The victory saw Liverpool go two points clear of City at the top of the table, though Pep Guardiola’s side can return to the summit by beating Cardiff on Wednesday night.

City have not dropped points in the league since losing at Newcastle more than two months ago and will defend their crown if they win all seven of their remaining games.

Liverpool, therefore, have no margin for error and winger Mane admitted on Sunday that he and his team-mates may need to finish the campaign faultlessly.

“To be honest, I think we need to win all of the games, even if it will not be easy,” the 26-year-old said.

“But we still can win every game because we are a good team and we play very well.”

The manner of Sunday’s win, with the three points snatched from Tottenham after Lucas Moura had cancelled out Roberto Firmino’s opener, could also be significant.

A draw would have made City overwhelming favourites to retain the title but Mané believes the drama of Liverpool’s win gives them added momentum.

“That’s what makes you more motivated and makes everyone say: ‘Let’s go, we can do it,’ so I think it’s always important.

“This is a very, very good sign and I think everything is possible, so let’s do it and win it.”

Mane added that Liverpool would have to improve on their performance against Tottenham, having been second-best for much of the second half.

“Sometimes it’s difficult after the international break because we had three sessions together, or two I think, so everybody was a little bit away sometimes.

“Now we are back and we start with a win, I think it’s very important. We have three or four more days to train together, be like before and go again.”
