Liverpool's Emre Can ruled out for up to six weeks, set to miss Europa League semi-final against Villarreal

Liverpool have confirmed Emre Can faces between four and six weeks out after rupturing ankle ligaments during the Europa League quarter-final success against Borussia Dortmund.

The Germany international was substituted during the latter stages of an epic revival for Jürgen Klopp’s men as the Reds overturned a 3-1 deficit to win 4-3 and secure safe passage to the semi-finals, where they will meet Villarreal.

Can’s chances of playing in the European Championship for Germany have thus been thrown into doubt but the Merseyside club insist there remains the possibility that he may return to action before the domestic season’s close.

The 22-year-old has made 46 appearances for Liverpool this season. Fellow midfielder and captain Jordan Henderson will miss the rest of the season with damaged knee ligaments.

The Reds' reward for Thursday's dramatic victory over Klopp’s former employers – one they are now certain to face without Can - is a trip to Spain for the first leg on 28 April, with the return at Anfield on 5 May.
