Liverpool defender Joe Gomez will miss the Champions League final and England’s 2018 World Cup campaign in Russia this summer after undergoing ankle surgery.
The 20-year-old had never fully recovered from the injury he picked up while on international duty and aggravated the problem while playing against West Bromwich Albion and then Stoke City .
His performances in those games were questioned but it has been revealed that he was carrying an injury during those fixtures and will now miss the final with Real Madrid in Kiev on 26 May.
He also confirmed he would miss the World Cup, which will come as a blow to manager Gareth Southgate , who is a big fan of the Liverpool man.
“Gutted to confirm that my season for both club and country is over having undergone successful ankle surgery,” he wrote on Instagram. “Been a tough few weeks trying everything possible to be available on the pitch to help the team. I’m going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre-season.
“The focus now is to support the team in the two biggest games of the season! Thank you for all the support over the course of the season.”
Liverpool also confirmed the news with a statement on Monday, which read: “Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez has undergone an operation on an ankle injury. The surgery, which has now addressed the issue, means the 20-year-old will play no part in the remaining two fixtures of the 2017-18 campaign, or the World Cup finals with England.

“However, Gomez will be ready for the start of Liverpool’s pre-season training schedule in July following a rehabilitation period.”
His injury is the second big loss to both Liverpool and England, following Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ’s knee complaint which ended his season against Roma .
Jurgen Klopp still has concerns over Adam Lallana and Emre Can as well, with the former still not fully fit after his hamstring problems and the latter struggling with a back problem. Joel Matip ’s thigh, which has caused him to miss the last few weeks.
