Liverpool vs Manchester United: Visitors could be without Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Luke Shaw for Monday clash
Mkhitaryan, Shaw and Jones are all doubts for Monday night's Premier League fixture
Manchester United are expected to be without Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Luke Shaw for Monday night’s clash against rivals Liverpool.
Under Jose Mourinho’s request, Mkhitaryan missed Armenia’s recent World Cup qualifier against Romania as he fights to regain full fitness.
The Armenian has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford and his latest thigh injury has further hindered his slow start to life in England.
Luke Shaw is another doubt for Mourinho as he looks ahead to Monday’s game. The defender was not rushed back by England, with interim England manager Gareth Southgate stressing last week that the left-back “isn’t quite back fit yet”.
Phil Jones also remains out of action after sustaining a knee injury in September. Mourinho revealed in Rotterdam last month that the centre-back had picked up a medical knee ligament prior to the side’s Europa League opener against Feyenoord.
Mourinho is now faced with the challenge of keeping his squad fresh and fit as they attempt to tackle three games in six days across the next week.
As for Liverpool, Monday night’s hosts remain anxious over the availability of Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum.
Lallana is still recovering from a groin injury he sustained at Swansea in their last match before the international break, while Wijnaldum limped off with a hamstring problem during Holland’s World Cup qualifying defeat by France earlier this week.
Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez remain sidelined with long-term injuries, but Emre Can is likely to be an option having recovered from an ankle injury he sustained against Burton Albion in the EFL Cup.
