When Liverpool can win the Premier League after Manchester United push rivals closer with derby win over City
The Reds are now on the brink of a first league title in 30 years
Liverpool are now just two wins away from winning the Premier League title after champions Manchester City lost the derby to Manchester United.
The Reds now know their magic number will be 88 points, with City 25 points adrift. And with the champions only having 10 games remaining, their maximum points total from this point is 87.
Liverpool face Everton next before Crystal Palace on 21 March, which is likely the game to clinch their first title in 30 years.
If that is the case, then City would likely have to give a reluctant guard of honour at the Etihad to Liverpool in the next game when they host Jurgen Klopp’s side on 5 April.
The Reds can win the title sooner than that though, or even before they play next.
That’s because City play Arsenal on Wednesday 11 March, then Burnley next Saturday on 14 March before the Reds play again, and although it is unlikely, should Pep Guardiola’s side lose both games, their maximum points total would be 81 points.
So Reds fans would then have the pleasure of Everton handing out a guard of honour to their rivals at Goodison Park.
To win the title outright at the home of their city rivals, Liverpool must hope that City lose either to Arsenal or Burnley (or draw both).
That would then enable the Reds to clinch the title at Goodison – a dream scenario for the league leaders and a nightmare for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.
