Liverpool appoint Andreas Schlumberger as head of recovery and performance

Andreas Schlumberger has been appointed as Liverpool’s head of recovery and performance.

The champions have hired the 54-year-old from Schalke following the 1-1 draw against West Brom, while Schlumberger previously worked with Jurgen Klopp during a five-year spell with Borussia Dortmund until 2015.

The existing relationship with the Reds boss should ensure a smooth transition for Schlumberger, who occupies a newly-created role at Anfield as Klopp’s side bid to remain on top.

Liverpool confirmed the news on their official website: "This newly-created specialist role will support and work in close collaboration with the current performance, medical and rehabilitation leadership."

Schlumberger has experience at Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach and Nurnberg, as well as work with the German Football Association, particularly with the younger age groups.

Schlumberger will begin work with the Reds at the newly-opened, state-of-the-art AXA Training Centre.

The Reds will face Newcastle tomorrow, hoping to bounce back after dropping points to the Baggies last time out, and Klopp expects an “angry” response.

"We don't live in dreamland and just win football matches because we want to win them - we have to work for it and we have to play for it and we have to finish the situations off," he said.

"These kind of things, what the boys are able to do. That's it. "In the end, we just drew a Premier League game, that can happen. It can happen against West Brom, they had a new manager (Sam Allardyce) and they played in the first half a system I didn't see a lot in my life, a 6-4-0 or whatever.

"That's completely fine, they have challenges to stay this kind of disciplined for the rest of the season.

"We have to be disciplined as well, in a different way. We have to do both, being offensive, active, creative and defend. That's what we have to do and we could have done that better. That's it."
