Louis van Gaal has offered an indication that Ryan Giggs will be found a place among his coaching staff if he takes over at Manchester United.

The current Netherlands manager is expected to be announced as David Moyes' permanent successor this week, but there is uncertainty whether the man who has filled the role on a temporary basis will remain at Old Trafford.

Giggs led the United team for the final four games of the season, recording two wins, a draw and a defeat during that spell. Some have pushed the Welshman's claim to be given the job full-time but United are set to turn to the more experienced option of Van Gaal following a hugely disappointing campaign.

There have been questions over whether the pair can work closely together with Giggs wielding much power at Old Trafford. However, Van Gaal has said that he likes to keep an existing coach on his staff when he takes over a new club.

Without speaking specifically about Giggs, Van Gaal outlined the benefits of such a move.

"When I go to a new club, I always want to keep one coach from the existing staff," said the Netherlands manager.

"At Bayern that person was Herman Kerland, who is still working there now under Pep Guardiola.

"I wanted to know who was coming through the youth system. I always want to know that.

"He is the man who said to me: 'Muller, Badstuber and Alaba. These are the players.'

"So I let them train with the first team, I observed them – and then I decided where they were going to play."

Van Gaal is currently preparing the Netherlands for the World Cup but as soon as the Dutch campaign in Brazil is over he will be free to take up a new position.
